Elizabeth Kaderabek, Violin
Elizabeth Kaderabek grew up in a musical family, the oldest child of retired Philadelphia Orchestra principal trumpet Frank Kaderabek’s 5 children. She began studying the violin at age 6 with the famous concertmaster and teacher Mischa Mischakoff. In high school she had hoped to go into medicine, but wound up studying philosophy for one semester before returning to Philadelphia and enrolling at the Philadelphia Musical Academy as a student of William De Pasquale.
Elizabeth loves to travel and has been all over the world, mostly through her music. In 1984&5 she was the concertmaster of the Spoleto Festival, both in South Carolina and Italy. For 10 years she was a member of the New York CityOpera National Co., the last 3 as concertmaster, and spent 3 months of each year bringing opera to small college towns across the United States. In May 2015 she was in China with Orchestra 2001, the contemporary music ensemble based at Swarthmore College, performing several premiers, including Andrew Rudin’s solo violin work Canapés. The past 24 summers have been spent in Santa Fe, New Mexico as a member of the Santa Fe Opera, which has spawned a love of camping, hiking, and mountain-biking. Santa Fe is also were she developed her passion for yoga, a wonderful antidote to the physical demands of the violin.
In Philadelphia she is the acting principal second violinist with the Chamber Orchestra, a first violinist with the Pennsylvania Ballet and Opera Company, as well as a regular substitute with the Philadelphia Orchestra. She is also a dedicated private teacher, and was a recent finalist in the annual teaching award presented by the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra.
Arts and crafts such as quilt- and jewelry-making have always been favorites of Liz’s, as well as cooking and entertaining. When she and developmental psychologist Michael Tucker were married in 2003, they made all of the food for over 100 guests. They’re now working on renovations to the old house they purchased, and are kept quite busy with their 13 year old son Nicholas, and rescued Lab-mix Bella.
